Artist’s Statement

Concept, composition and color (tone) all play an important role in the making of my paintings and images. My formal education in Architecture and Design, many years of experience in the building trades, worldwide missions and the Architectural field have provided me with a solid foundation for The Arts and an appreciation for The Creation as well as the built environment.

Drawing has always been a part of my life. I remember when I was young I would enjoy drawing ships, cars, maps, comics and villages. Then, in my teens I rendered wildfowl and fish and eventually discovered architectural drawing in high school.  I’ve been drawing and rendering architecture professionally for close to thirty years. My recent discovery of pastels and oil paints has really ignited a joy and enthusiasm for the craft of making a painting. The discovery of many contemporary masters to learn from has been a steady wealth of knowledge and inspiration, sparking in me the desire to strive for excellence and always seek improvement. For me, the entire process is challenging, but certainly enjoyable. I couldn’t be more thankful for the ability to participate in the activity of planning and producing a painting. As for now, living in Michigan with my wonderful family provides plenty of adventures as well as a bounty of subject matter to capture on canvas (or on an sd card to work with later). Great Lakes, dunes, lighthouses, boats, car designs and scenic landscapes all provide great reference material for this contemporary artist to work with.

Realizing that an overall poetic statement of beauty (that stands the chance to be well received or even cherished) is the ultimate goal for the timeless painter to be successful, I try to peer through the technicalities and then spontaneously sculpt with brush, pigment and support my interpretation of the localized subject at hand.
